County of Madera is establishing a list of qualified applicants for this position. Applications will be accepted continuously until filled and the list will be used to fill current vacancies in this classification.

This position is currently undergoing review as part of a class study and therefore both the title and the pay range assigned may be subject to change upon completion of the study.

Under general supervision, to conduct professional occupational therapy and administer a variety of treatment plans for physically and neurologically disabled patients eligible for California Children's Services Medical Therapy Unit; and to do related work as required.SUPERVISION EXERCISEDMay provide supervision over lower level Therapy Assistants and other staff providing assistance in the administration of occupational therapy treatment plans. 
Plans and performs occupational therapy treatments for neurologically and physically impaired patients; consults with doctors and supervisors to determine treatment plans for each patient; administers tests such for function, range of motion, and Activities of Daily Living (ADL); evaluations and perceptual screenings; coordinates, teaches, and supervises functional exercises; develops exercises and activities to improve fine motor skills and activities of daily living; attends appropriate clinics, management meetings, and case conferences to discuss patient status; documents and records patient's response from treatment, and reports any changes to doctor; teaches self-care activities with or without the use of adapted devices; instructs clients, family and caregivers regarding home exercise programs and equipment needs; fabricates and applies splints as indicated; assists in inventory and preparation of ordering therapeutic splinting materials supplies and ADL equipment; adapt games, arts and crafts as therapeutic treatment; may assist in training therapy assistants in the treatment of patients; may assist in monitoring and coordinating the work of lower level staff and students in administering occupational therapy treatment programs.OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIESPerforms related duties and responsibilities as assigned. 
Knowledge of:
  • Principles, objectives, methods and techniques of pediatric occupational therapy.
  • Federal, state and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, policies and procedures of occupational therapy programs, services and treatment methods.
  • Skeletal anatomy and kinesiology.
  • Basic pathology of orthopedic and neurological disabilities relative to the objectives of occupational therapy.
  • Child growth and development.
  • Physical and psychological problems of physically disabled children and their families.
  • Design, use and care of orthopedic and therapeutic equipment and appliances, including splinting materials.
  • Principles and procedures of medical record keeping.
Skill to:
  • Understand and interpret physician's orders and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Provide effective occupational therapy treatments and instructions to disabled patients and their parents, caregivers, and others responsible for assisting the patient in their therapy treatment plan.
  • Evaluate patient needs and the effectiveness of orthopedic and therapeutic equipment and appliances. Design and construct splints and adaptive equipment.
  • Operate a computer, assigned office equipment and applicable software.
Ability to:
  • Learn the functions and operations of the County’s Medical Therapy Unit.
  • Adapt various functions to the therapeutic requirements of individual patients. Gather information and prepare reports.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate, concise case records and necessary reports. Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with patients, families, caregivers, coworkers and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Exercise appropriate independent judgement and professional ethics.
  • Exercise safe body mechanics and lifting techniques as indicated in the course of work. 
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

License/RegistrationPossession of a valid license as an Occupational Therapist issued by the California, Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Occupational Therapy.Special RequirementsEssential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and lift 50 lbs.; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
The application review process will include screening to ensure applications are complete and meet all minimum qualifications. In addition to the application, the applicant is required to complete the Supplemental Questions to further evaluate their education, training and experience relative to the required knowledge, skills and abilities for the position. Applicants must submit answers that are as complete as possible.
Only qualified applicants who pass the minimum qualifications review, will be invited to the examination process which may be administered either by a written examination, oral interview, or any combination of qualifications appraisal determined by the Department of Human Resources to be appropriate. The Department of Human Resources will make reasonable accommodation in the examination process for disabled applicants. If you have an accommodation request, please indicate such on your application. Passing score is 70% out of 100% on each assessment section.

PLACEMENT ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST:
The Civil Service Commission may limit the number of qualified applicants eligible to participate in the examination process. If two or more candidates have the same total final score on an examination, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in that portion of the examination which has the greatest weight. The names of two or more eligibles having final ratings which are identical shall be grouped on the eligible list as tie names with equal rank for certification and appointment purposes.
 
Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list, in rank order based on a calculation of their total score from the examination process. The eligible list established by this recruitment will be active for a minimum of six (6) months or one (1) year, unless otherwise determined by the Director pursuant to section 6-4 (b) and may be extended for up to an additional year by the Commission.
 
PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
As a condition of employment with the County of Madera, a candidate must submit to a Tuberculosis (TB) screening, and related follow up testing as necessary. Designated classifications* are also subject to a medical examination, which includes a review of medical history. TB screenings and medical exams are administered by the Madera County Public Health Department and/or health care professional designated by the County.
